If you've seen the movie, American Psycho. then you probably will understand this alot more. In the movie, Paul Bateman kills a coworker of his, Paul Allen who is better than him. But Paul Allen doesn't know who Bateman is, he thinks he is someone named Marcus Habersham.
To make a long story short, and to not ruin it- it is a picture of the 80's yuppie society and how everyone wanted to fit in, and in turn it made everyone basically the same. So here it is: why would u want to blend in? Isn't it the worst when someone mistakes you for someone else, and calls you the wrong name? In the movie this happens to Bateman, when his own lawyer doesn't know him in person. No one knows anyone truly in this movie, and if you haven't seen it, you must.
Its awesome, kinda weird, but thats the point. There is one line that Bateman says, that sounds real cliche, when his fiance asks him to quit his job since he doesn't like it, and he looks at her and simply says "I want to fit in" It sounds stupid, but that is how bad it was/is. I mean, it hasn't really changed. We are still just as bad nowadays aren't we? I will admit, I hate standing out, and I don't think that is what we should strive for- that strange rebellion. But I hate conformity, even though I conform just like everyone else.
