Sometimes you can see God in the smallest of things. That sounds ironic, I know- seeing as how our God is infinitely larger than life. Maybe you have never thought about that- but I have.
Like right now, the blinds on our sliding glass door are closed, and there is a slight breeze inside from the AC running (yes, AC- my wife is out of town, and I like it to be 70 or below). The breeze is blowing against the blinds, causing them to cast a pattern of short rays of light against the carpet, moving with an actual rhythm! To me, it’s a visual representation of music.
And I see God in that. I see a imagery of God, yes, but I also see God himself in the light’s pattern- because there is no way something that beautiful and uniform could come out of a chaotic blend of air conditioning, blinds, and light. It takes up one square foot, and it shows me God’s creativity, and love of beauty.
Or when you think you are out of butter, and you have already gone to the store twice that day, and you can’t go again because you are in the middle of cooking. You scrape the sides just to check, and you have just enough. Its not a moment where you fall down on your face weeping and praising the name of God, but where you smile, and earnestly say “Thank you God!” That could be another example of coincidence; but I believe it is God showing us that he provides for us.
This is no allegory. I’m not looking at things and applying Biblical principles to them in obvious fashions. No- I truly believe that God himself is in these instances.
Another cool thing about small things and God is the fact that the things that blow our mind, the things that rock our world- are small things to God. In 1 Chronicles 17, God tells David that the Messiah will come from David’s bloodline. David rejoices, and tells God, “And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations, O LORD God!” (v 17)
That blows me away. To think that God telling his servant that the Messiah will come through his bloodline is the equivalent to scraping just enough butter out of an empty tub to our Lord!
